After installing Firefox (which you don't have to) and installing Disconnect (promoted only on the apple store. Ahem), you'll notice what your privacy looks like online. Head to any website, and open up the extension.

Voila, It looks something like this. Thank The Economist.

Now, that's a reasonably typical list of trackers for sites I visit. Most of my sites contained around twenty.

What troubled me was this site.

newyorker.com

I apologize for the slight irony. I'm a big Dante fan, and I was looking forward to reading this. Along with the 86 other tabs I have opened, it was one at the top of my list to get to.

But after seeing 99+ blocks, I'm feeling slightly disappointed. I cannot put my finger on the why. Should I be pleased that they want to know me so badly? Or shocked that my data is being sent to that many sites?

Again, that's ninety-nine with a plus sign. That's an incredible amount of sites looking for my personal information. No wonder my browser's tracking is already at half a million.

I encourage everyone to get Disconnect or anything similar and check out sites you visit. See what information they gather from you. Do you feel as shocked as I do?
